IDE is an abbreviation of
Integrated Drive Electronics. IDE hard disk drive format was later
renamed to hard disk ATA. The original IDE name reflected the innovative
integration of HDD disk controller with hard disk drive itself, which
was not found in the earlier storage disks. Moving the HDD disk controller
from the interface card to the hard disk drive itself helped to
standardize interfaces, and to reduce the cost and complexity. IDE hard
disk drives were used in personal computers for a long period of time. |

The 40 pin IDE ATA connection of P-ATA transfers 16 bits of data at a
time on the data cable. Higher speed requirements for data transfer to
and from the hard drive led to an "ultra DMA" mode later. One of the
most popular IDE ATA hard disk drive brands is Western Digital. The
Western Digital hard disk drives have enjoyed reputations of high
performance, low noise level and the best warranty in the industry. In
addition, Western Digital IDE ATA hard disk drives are compatible with
virtually any type of IDE ATA disk controllers. |
